Missing a Class? Here’s What to Do

Life happens—illness, appointments, or unexpected commitments might mean missing a dance class. Here’s how to ensure your child stays engaged and caught up while also keeping things running smoothly for their peers and teacher.

Why Attendance Matters

Regular attendance helps build confidence, social connections, and a sense of routine, ensuring each student gets the most out of their experience. Missing a class doesn’t just impact your child’s learning but can also affect group activities like concert routines and shared confidence-building moments.

Steps to Take if a Class is Missed

1. Notify of the Absence
Complete the online Missed Class Form as soon as you know your child will be away. This ensures the teacher and administration team stay informed.
2. Catch up Options
  • Students are encouraged to attend a catch-up class during the same year.
  • Parent/caregiver notification is needed to confirm attendance at a catch-up session.
3. Video & Activities
For convenience, catch-up videos are shared once the missed class form is completed. These videos allow students to practise at home and stay on track.
(Rising, Shooting, and Shining Star dancers can also access additional resources through Band APP)

Timeline for catch ups

All make-up classes must occur within the same calendar year as the missed session. If you are enrolled for a shorter time (eg a month) you will need to ensure you arrange any catch up classes during the period you are enrolled into.

CLASSES ARE NON TRANSFERABLE

Missed classes can only be made up by the student enrolled in that level—another child cannot take their place.

Level-Specific Attendance

Catch-up sessions must be attended at the same or lower class level. However, exploring a new dance style at the same level is an option

CANCELLED CLASS – MORE THAN 24 HOURS NOTICE FOR ALL CLASSES

In circumstances when A Star Dance gives more than 24 hours notice of a cancelled class an alternate class will be organised by A Star Dance or the parent. No credits will be given for this cancelled class. Notification of the cancelled class is made through email. This catch up class must be taken in the same year as the cancelled class

CANCELLED CLASS – LESS THAN 24 HOURS NOTICE FOR ALL AFTERNOON CLASSES

In rare circumstances, classes may need to be cancelled. Should A Star Dance give less than 24 hours notice, a credit will be applied to your A Star Dance Account. The credit will remain in your A Star Dance account for 6 months and can be used for dance tuition or dancewear. The credit will not be refunded. Notification of a cancelled class will be made through SMS and emails in the hope that everyone receives this information as quickly and as easily as possible.

SATURDAY CLASSES AND ALL WEEKDAY MORNING CLASSES

Classes may be combined on a Saturday, and weekday mornings. In the event that classes are merged on the above mentioned days students will be given the option to either attend the same class at an alternate venue on the same day or to arrange a catch up class within the same year

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS & CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

Classes are generally held on public holidays and Christmas Pageant Day. Times or venues may vary slightly, so be sure to check newsletters or emails. Missed public holiday & pageant day classes are eligible for catch-up options but are not refundable or transferable.

TEACHER IS AWAY

If your teacher is away we will contact you via email. Where possible we will have an alternate teacher take class. Should we not be able to arrange another teacher we will allow students to attend an alternate class day or venue

FORCED CLOSURE

In cases of unexpected closures, all classes transition online. Updated schedules and details are shared promptly through multiple communication channels.
